Mini-Course in Mathematical Modeling on Epidemiology (June 27 – 30, 2022)

Abstract: Mathematical epidemiology is a branch of epidemiology concerned with the formulation, analysis and simulation of mathematical models of the spread of infectious diseases within populations. Unlike classical epidemiology, mathematical epidemiology makes a mechanistic description of the processes involved in the spread, with the aim of understanding and explaining epidemic episodes. In particular, it allows the theoretical evaluation of disease control policies, thus complementing classical epidemiology and its more quantitative aim.
This “short course” of about twenty hours will give an overview of the discipline. It will highlight the necessary interactions between reality, modelling, mathematical and computational analysis, and use of data. It will review classic models and methods in the field, emphasizing the interpretation and use of models in a context not only of mathematics, but also of public health. The use of numerical methods will underpin the entire course.

Speaker: Professor Julien Arino (University of Manitoba, Canada)
